Helix Piercing Healing Time and Aftercare
A helix piercing is one of the most popular ear piercings — and for good reason. Placed along the upper cartilage of the ear, it's versatile, stylish, and suits almost everyone. But helix piercing healing time is longer than a standard lobe piercing, so knowing how to care for it properly makes all the difference.
How Long Does a Helix Piercing Take to Heal?
Helix piercings are cartilage piercings, which means they take significantly longer to heal than soft tissue piercings. You can expect:
- Initial healing: 3–6 months
- Full healing: 6–12 months (sometimes up to 18 months)
During this time, the piercing may look and feel healed on the outside while still healing internally. This is why patience is key — changing your jewellery too early is one of the most common causes of complications.
Helix Piercing Aftercare: Our Professional Recommendations
With over 30 years of professional piercing experience, here's what we recommend at Julez Piercing:
- Saline solution: Clean your piercing twice daily with a sterile saline spray. Avoid cotton wool, which can leave fibres behind.
- Hands off: Don't touch, twist, or rotate your jewellery. This is an outdated practice that causes irritation.
- Sleep carefully: Use a travel pillow or piercing pillow to avoid putting pressure on your helix while sleeping.
- Avoid swimming: Stay out of pools, hot tubs, and open water for at least the first 3 months.
- No harsh products: Keep hairspray, dry shampoo, and perfume away from the piercing site.
Signs Your Helix Piercing Is Healing Well
Some redness, swelling, and clear or white discharge in the first few weeks is completely normal. A healthy healing piercing should gradually become less tender and produce less discharge over time.
