Tragus vs Conch: Which Piercing is Right for You?

Two of the most popular cartilage piercings right now are the tragus and the conch. Both look stunning and offer a lot of styling versatility — but they're quite different in terms of placement, pain, healing, and jewellery options. Here's our guide to help you decide.

What is a Tragus Piercing?

The tragus is the small, thick flap of cartilage that sits directly in front of the ear canal. A tragus piercing sits right on this flap and is typically worn with a small flat-back labret stud or a tiny hoop. It's a subtle, delicate piercing that works beautifully as a standalone piece or as part of a curated ear.

  • Pain level: Moderate — the tragus is dense cartilage, so there's more resistance, but most people find it very manageable.
  • Healing time: 6–12 months
  • Best jewellery: Flat-back labret studs (5–6mm), small seamless hoops
  • Suits: Most ear shapes; particularly flattering on smaller ears

What is a Conch Piercing?

The conch is the large, shell-like area of cartilage in the centre of the ear. It can be pierced in two ways: the inner conch (the deeper cup area) or the outer conch (the flatter area closer to the helix). Conch piercings are bold and eye-catching, and they look incredible with a statement hoop or a cluster stud.

  • Pain level: Moderate to high — the conch is a thick area of cartilage, but most clients handle it well.
  • Healing time: 6–12 months
  • Best jewellery: Flat-back labret studs initially; large diameter hoops (10–12mm) once healed
  • Suits: Larger ears with a defined conch area; great for making a statement

Which Should You Choose?

Here's a quick guide:

  • Choose a tragus if you want something subtle and delicate that complements other ear piercings without dominating.
  • Choose a conch if you want a bold, statement piercing that stands out on its own or anchors a larger ear curation.
  • Consider your ear anatomy — not everyone has a prominent enough tragus or conch for these piercings. We'll always assess your anatomy before recommending a placement.
  • Think about your lifestyle — if you wear earphones or headphones regularly, a tragus piercing may be uncomfortable during healing.
